What I Wore: adidas

Why: It is no secret I love adidas. With a plethora of posts detailing the brand, my loyalty can be traced to my first pieces of technical running apparel: an orange and navy tank-top and short ensemble circa 2001 (if only I had a picture)!

Truly a blessing of timing and a friend’s referral, I am excited to share I am no longer just a brand enthusiast, but an employee of adidas North America! While my job title reads: adidas Gazelle, I am more commonly referred to as a Running Tech Rep.

My role officially begins December 10, with training at the North America headquarters in Portland, OR, and my job will entail working with running speciality stores in Utah and Southern Idaho. Serving as a Tech Rep, I will work closely with stores to provide product knowledge to staff members and consumers, as well as represent the brand at local running events.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and so excited to take on a different role in the running industry. While this means a few things will be changing with What I Wore (On My Run), I am eager to look at apparel through a different lens and share new content. In order to stay up to date on my new adventure, feel free to follow along both here and on facebook!

Wool: The Original Moisture-Wicker

What I Wore:
Sports Bra: Ibex Balance Sports Bra
Top: Ibex Echo Sport Tee
Bottom: Nike Road Race 2” Short

Why: Between starting three new jobs and acclimating to Salt Lake City, the theme of this month has been adjusting to change.

With this, I have even begun to branch out in my running apparel. While typically trying new running clothes would not be considered a novel activity, my newest clothes are made of… wool.

As much as I adore trying new apparel, I have always been a bit leery of wool-based running clothes. While wool has long enjoyed a prominent position in the outdoor industry, I have a difficult time affiliating the fabric with anything but itchy holiday sweaters.

With this in mind, when I was given the opportunity to try out wool athletic apparel from the Vermont-based company Ibex, I was skeptical it would pass my test for comfort and functionality.

Credited with being a natural moisture wicking material, wool was an athletic fabric long before synthetic fabrics were invented. While wool is stereotypically itchy and thick, most athletic apparel is composed of a distinct type of wool: merino. As a finer fiber, the wool of merino sheep is one of softest on the market, while also being naturally antibacterial.

Despite the credibility of the fabric, it is hard to fathom a wool item being optimal in the summer heat. Evaluating Ibex’s merino-based Echo Sport Tee and Balance Sports Bra, I was surprised to find it just as effective in wicking moisture as my technical synthetic apparel.

With a similar shape and support level as Moving Comfort’s Serena bra, a staple piece in my closet, the Balance Sports Bra has a wonderful, barely-there feel. Sized a bit on the smaller size, I appreciate it’s snug, soft fit as well as it’s ability to keep me feeling dry.

As a t-shirt I can wear beyond just running, I love the simplicity of the Echo Sport Tee. It is lightweight and has a tailored fit throughout the shoulders while remaining loose in the body. After several wears and washes, what I appreciate most is the shirt has not retained any scent.

The only major downside to these Ibex items, and most merino wool products, is the cost. As a natural and renewable fiber, wool has a much higher price point than most synthetic running apparel, causing it to be less accessible to the average consumer.

Price aside, for those looking to branch out from the typical polyester-based products, I would suggest giving merino wool a try. While time will tell if the durability and function of this fabric is truly superior to synthetic apparel, so far I am impressed! Have you ever given wool a try?

The Engagement

Date: August 6, 2012
Time: 5:30 pm
Weather: Sunny/72 degrees
Location: Yellowstone National Park

What I Wore:
Jacket: Brooks LSD Jacket III

Why: From packing up and moving across the country, to beginning three new jobs, it has been a whirlwind of a month. While my running has been anything but ideal, the past few weeks have been quite an adventure.

Most exciting of all, on August 6th at Yellowstone National Park, my boyfriend Josh proposed! After a fun day exploring the major tourist sites, Josh and I were headed north through the park when we spotted the lookout point for Firehole Falls.

We climbed around near the falls for a few minutes before deciding to grab the tripod and take pictures. As we were staging photos, Josh suddenly began talking about our future and alluded to a comment I made earlier in the day about begining our adventure together in Utah.

Immediately suspicious why he was bringing this up, my stomach filled with butterflies wondering if he was actually going to propose. Seconds later, he said, ”I think it’s only fitting this big adventure begin with a question,” and got down on one knee.

With that, he asked me to marry him and I said yes without any hesitation (although, I will admit, I first squealed about how much I loved the ring). It was such an amazing surprise and with little cell phone service in the park, we enjoyed the next few hours of being the only people in the world to know about the engagement.

It was such an exciting day and looking back on it, it made much more sense why Josh was so insistent I not wear running clothes during our day in the park. While he was unable to persuade me to wear a dress, we compromised with a pair of cut-offs and my Brooks LSD Jacket.

As an ultra-lightweight piece, the jacket is designed to provide protection during cool, windy conditions and proved to be ideal for hiking. It had a storable hood and is water resistant, although it cannot handle much more than a mist (or the steam of a Yellowstone geyser). It has a slim fit, looks great with diamonds and packs into itself, making it easy to carry on a run.

While I hope we are still a few weeks away from needing to wear such a jacket, I was happy to have it along for our adventure in Yellowstone. It has been a busy few weeks, but as I get more settled in Salt Lake City I am eager to share the excitement of the next few months!

Three Minutes

Why: I love summer running but with daily temperatures rising to at least 98 degrees F for fourteen of the last twenty-one days, I am starting to long for brisk fall weather!

Although I have still been making it out the door everyday to embrace the “cool” mornings, I have occasionally been turning to the treadmill to remind myself what it is like to not have to shuffle through a blanket of heat and humidity.

As someone who loves being outdoors, I find treadmill running to be incredibly boring and as a result, often struggle to run for as long as I would like. To help overcome this challenge, I try to use the treadmill’s consistent speed as an opportunity to complete a tempo or fartlek run.

When a workout will not cut it, I try to focus on only three minutes of my run at a time. Although it is a short bit in the big picture, it comes from a piece of advice Meb Keflezighi gave me at a running camp. As he ran alongside me during a 1000m repeat, he provided encouragement as I began to struggle by saying, ”you can do anything for three minutes.” I have carried this advice with me throughout my running career and use it as a tool to help focus on only small portions of workouts and races at a time. On the treadmill, it helps remind me that nothing is so boring or hard that I cannot do it for three minutes. After that three minutes is up, I tackle the next three.

Aside from avoiding the heat, occasionally running indoors gives me the opportunity to wear some of my favorite tops (instead of simply a sports bra). Purchased this spring, the New Balance NBx Prism Short Sleeve was an expensive but excellent investment. With an overall silky and soft feel, I love the thin mesh back that allows for increased breathability. I also enjoy that it has a long cut, includes a reflective strip on the back, and ultimately feels as though I am wearing nothing.

Unfortunately, with how much I like the top, I do not adore the bottoms. While I was excited for New Balance to come out with an ultra-short, split short, this piece still needs some tweaking. I love how short the bottoms are but with a lack of drawstring in the waist, I was forced to purchase a small when a medium would have been a more flattering fit on my rear. As a barely-there short, I hope to see improvements on this piece in seasons to come.

While the weather is less than ideal, with supplemental treadmill runs, early mornings and focusing on three minutes at a time, I am optimistic I will survive this summer. I hope your running is going well and that you are able to conquer the heat!

On The Move

With this in mind, the next few weeks hold very exciting things.

First and foremost, in the absence of homework, I am eager to share more consistent What I Wore (On My Run) posts. Second, as of early August, the scenery of my posts will be changing to the gorgeous, mountainous backdrop of Salt Lake City, Utah!

Between apartment hunting, packing, and visiting family and friends, the next month will undoubtedly be a blur of excitement and stress. Despite this, running is the last thing that will be cut from my daily routine. Much like I have mentioned in the past, the busier and more stressful my schedule, the more critical running and exercise is to my sense of well-being. I also want to enjoy as much sea level training as I can before the move!

For today’s run along the hilly shore of Lake Monroe, I wore this fun new Nike skort. Incredibly practical for both running and casual wear, the skort is composed of a thin outer skirt and a pair of yellow, gusset-lined, spandex shorts. With lots of storage, the skort has a zippered key pocket in the back and two large side pockets. As a comfortable and flattering piece, the only drawback is the side pockets lack closures, causing them to be risky to use during a run.

While I typically dislike mixing brands, I found my Adidas Fave Run Tee to be a perfect match with this skort. With two other colors also in my closet, I love the soft feel of this shirt; although I have found the tight weave of the fabric to be a bit stifling on hot, sunny days. Had I purchased a Nike top to correspond with the skort, I would have opted for the thin, breathable Miler Running Shirt.

It is bound to be a short and busy summer, but I am so excited to embrace the next few weeks as I prepare to move! Until then, anyone have tips on places to run or things to see in Salt Lake City?

Special Edition: Drake Relays

What I Wore:
Top(s): Under Armour Cold Gear; Asics official-issued polo; Asics Drake Relays 100th Anniversary long sleeve; Brooks ID Elite Jacket; Columbia rain jacket; Asics official-issued jacket
Bottom(s): Asics long tights; Aberombie and Fitch khakis; Rain pants
Hat(s): Generic headband; Asics Stadium Cap

Why: Every April I have the privilege of serving as an official at Drake Relays. While the job often requires standing for hours in the cold and rain, it is one of the highlights of my spring.

Often stereotyped as a role for retired old men, I began officiating at age 23 at the 100th Anniversary of Drake Relays. As one of the nation’s premiere track meets, my love for Drake Relays stems not just from being able to witness some of the greatest performances of the season, but through giving back to the track and field community.

Serving as a track umpire, my duty is to diligently watch each race to ensure every athlete has the opportunity to enjoy safe and impartial competition. In doing so, I strive to be one of the least memorable people in the stadium, making calls only in accordance with the rulebooks.

Certified through USA Track and Field, my officiating role extends beyond just Drake Relays, as I serve in paid and volunteer positions at local high school and college meets. Serving in this capacity is not always glamorous and sometimes not that fun, especially when I know calling a foul may mean an athlete’s disqualification, but it allows me to help further the sport I love.

As for what I wear when I officiate? At Drake Relays, Asics provides officials with two polo shirts, a jacket, cap and a pair of shoes. Utilizing these pieces as base and outer layers, I have learned layering is key to surviving long days as an official. With the chilly conditions at Drake this year, my wardrobe included seven layers on top and three on bottom. Although I often felt prepared for a snowstorm, my layering strategy kept me warm despite wind gusts and the occasional rain drop.

Not every meet requires such a substantial outfit nor such a large time commitment. As the highlight of my officiating year, I dedicate my weekend to Drake Relays but for the typical middle or high school meet I budget approximately 3-4 hours. Regardless of the meet or level of competition, I love my job as an official and enjoy being able to give back the track community.

Interested in becoming an official? Visit your state’s high school athletic association website to see what is necessary to serve at the middle or high school level or visit USA Track and Field to become certified for college and elite competitions.

What I Wore:
Top: Saucony Transition Sport Top
Bottom: Saucony Ignite Tight Capri

Why: Graduation is two weeks away and I am delighted to share I have most of my major projects and papers complete. Rather than spending the next two weeks stressing over final exams, I will surprisingly wrap up my Masters degree without too much anxiety.

With this in mind, for the first time this spring, I am actually getting into a great running routine. My mileage is starting to pick up, I have been completing workouts on a regular basis and even ran a 5k race yesterday. Although I am still in the early stages of regaining my fitness, I took on the hilly, local YMCA course to get a gauge of my speed heading into summer. I was quite pleased with the race, although my time of 19:31 was nearly two minutes behind the top female!

To help my sore calves recover from the hills, I took today’s run easy, sticking to the flat B-Line trail. While lately the weather has been gorgeous in the afternoon, the mornings have been a bit chilly, warranting the return of the classic spring running outfit: a thin long sleeve and capris.

Designed to accommodate transitional spring weather, the Saucony Transition Sport Top has a thin, meshy feel to it. Worn over simply a sports bra, it is a great weight for the days when I debate between wearing a short or long sleeve. The only drawback to the top is the sleeves become uncomfortably stretched when I attempt to use the thumb holes, otherwise it has a great fit.

The Saucony Ignite Tight Capri is a very basic, staple capri in my wardrobe; in fact, I like it so much I featured a blue pair this past November! Regardless of the weather, it is hard for me to go wrong with a comfortable, mid-weight capri such as this pair. It is tight fitting, does not ride above my knee and has a soft gusset, a feature I have often found lacking in other Saucony bottoms.

I do not anticipate needing to wear capri tights or a long sleeve much longer, but for now I am enjoying our last bit of cool spring weather. I hope your spring has been just as nice and you have had success with your training and racing!

BONUS FOOTAGE: A couple pictures from the from the start of yesterday’s YMCA race. Since it was a low-key race and it was in the upper 30s at the start, I opted to race in my favorite outfit:

What I Wore:
Top: Saucony Axion Printed Short Sleeve
Shorts: Saucony P.E. Printed Short

Why: Where has the time gone? Between school, work, applying for full-time jobs and traveling to Chicago, San Diego, and South Carolina, February and March have quickly disappeared.

Contributing to the quick pace is the abrupt change from winter to summer weather. With temperatures consistently in the seventies and eighties, it appears as though spring was completely missed this year. Not that I am complaining, but it has caused me to quickly transition my wardrobe from winter to summer apparel!

While my spring capris are still hoping to get some use, I am quite excited about the summer apparel already available. For today’s tempo run, through the quiet campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, I debuted this bright Saucony ensemble. With a circular pattern subtly detailed on the sides of top and throughout the short, it was a cheerful choice for a morning workout.

The top, which also corresponds well with the printed LX Mod Tight Short and the LX Mod Tight Capri, has a comfortable weight that is perfect for the seventy degree days of early summer. It fits well and is a bit longer than previous Saucony tops, which is a welcomed improvement as other tops have been too short for my long torso.

The shorts are incredibly comfortable with a loose fit and light, airy feel. The drawstring and elastic waist band are snug, which is perfect as I often struggle with Saucony shorts being too loose in the waist but too tight around the leg to size-down. As a basic piece, it is comparable to a slightly thiner version of the Nike Fast Pace short, which is a staple short in my summer wardrobe.

While a fairly simple outfit, I love that it is both playful and cute while remaining functional in warm weather. This summer weather may not last, but I am certainly looking forward to sharing more of this season’s spring and summer apparel as we move into April and my graduate studies wrap up. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring!

Warming Up

Date: February 7, 2012
Time: 11:30 am
Weather: Sunny/40 degrees F
Location: Bryan Park/Bloomington, IN

What I Wore:
Top: Asics Favorite Long Sleeve (Drake Relays Edition)
Bottom: Asics Myles II Run Pant (circa 2008)

Why: With temperatures lingering in the forties and fifties, it feels as though spring is already here. While winter will surely return, the crisp air and sunshine have been ideal for running.

As a former track athlete, it is impossible to not correlate this “warm weather” with the track season; it is as if my legs are predisposed to desire speed work and competition as soon as the weather turns temperate. Responding appropriately to this oddly timed “spring,” I have naturally begun to increase my workout frequency and intensity.

From tempo runs to track intervals, I approach every workout with the same routine: an easy two mile run, followed by dynamic drills, a few strides, and the removal of my “warm-up” apparel. Although not every locale is conducive to an outfit change, wearing and removing warm-up clothing prior to a hard effort helps me feel more relaxed and mentally prepared.

In most temperatures, I prefer to warm up in the Asics Myles II Run Pant. As a looser-fitting pant with a tapered leg and ankle zipper, they are comfortable without being bulky. They breathe well and keep me warm but not stifled when layered over shorts. While not the most flattering in shape, these pants are one of the most well worn items in my closet year-round.

My warm-up top varies, but my current item of choice is the Asics Favorite Long Sleeve. Sporting the logo for my favorite annual sports event, Drake Relays, I received this top as a gift. Not only is the top comfortable, I love that it provides a reminder of the amazing track and field performances that take place at Drake each April. Worn in a size medium to ensure arm length, the Favorite Long Sleeve is lightweight and breathable yet sufficiently warm. It layers nicely over t-shirts and tanks, which allows it to be a perfect warm-up top.

Much like I spend time warming up my body before competition, I do the same before a workout. Through wearing loose-fitting clothing over my workout clothes, I am able to feel comfortable and relaxed while preparing to work hard. Trivial perhaps, but I thrive on the mental shift from “warm-up” to “workout” simply through removing clothing. How do you approach warming up?

Creative Indoor Running

What I Wore:
Top: Zoot Performance MICROlite Long Sleeve
Bottom: Zoot Performance Thermo Tight
Gloves: Mizuno Breath Thremo Glove (circa 2006)

Why: With our only snowfall melting immediately, I have few complaints about this winter. Despite this, I have still been successful at creating weather-related excuses to avoid running.

On days when my excuses are a bit too lame, I look back through my running log to recall my two winters living in the frozen tundra of Des Moines, Iowa. With entries chronicling runs in wind chills as low as -18 degrees F, I am reminded no weather is too bad to conquer. I am also reminded I am much smarter now than I was back then.

I do not envy those who only have no other option, but the more I mature in my training, the more I realize I do not have to get outside everyday in order to be a successful runner. Although I will always prefer to be outdoors, when the sidewalks are slick and the temperatures are frigid, I have learned to get creative about acquiring mileage indoors:

Treadmill: When I anticipate running on a treadmill, I try to schedule a tempo run or fartleks for that day. Not only does performing a workout help the time pass more quickly, I enjoy how easy it is to control speed when on a treadmill.

Indoor Track: On “fitness-center” style tracks I avoid doing workouts as it is often a tight space, instead I like to break up my run by completing a couple miles, stopping to perform dynamic form drills, and then continuing my run. I also enjoy running a couple miles on the track before completing my run on a treadmill.

Indoor Space: Ever run through school hallways, a city skyway system, or during “walking hours” at the mall? Every venue has different rules, but a little exploration has helped me come across some unique indoor running opportunities. For example, I found the indoor soccer arena in my hometown allows runners/walkers to utilize the 350m spectating deck at no cost!

Parking Garage: While care must be taken and bright clothing should be worn, a quiet parking garage can provide a great hill workout while providing protection from the elements.

Pool: Even if you are not a lap swimmer, you can still reap benefits from heading to the pool. I like to use a flotation belt or Aquajogger to help me stay afloat in the deep end while completing a normal distance run or workout sans impact.

When the above options or cross training are not available, I make sure to at least get a strength training session in to ensue I am making some progress towards my goals. I also try not to fuss when my best option is to just take the day off.

Luckily, this winter I have only had to head inside on a few occasions. For today’s run I enjoyed the 30 degree weather venturing around town in my thermal Zoot apparel. Featured in October, the Performance MICROlite long sleeve is fairly thin but sufficient for keeping me warm. It runs small and is tight fitting, so it is best to go up a size. The Performance Thermo Tight is thick and great for sub-30 degree F temperatures. It runs small and lacks a drawstring, so it is important to try this piece on before purchasing to ensure comfort and fit.

While I am enjoying the fair weather while it lasts, I am sure this winter will have a few chilly surprises in store. No matter what, it is nice to know I do not always have to brave frigid weather just to complete a run. I hope your winter running is going well!

Winter Proof Spandex

What I Wore:
Top: Sugoi Midzero Zip
Bottom: Sugoi SubZero Tight
Gloves: Mizuno Breath Thremo Glove (circa 2006)
Headband: Generic Fleece Headband

Why: Happy New Year! With snow flurries and ice earlier in the week, winter weather has finally arrived in Bloomington, IN, at least temporarily.

Although a persistent cough has kept me inside for a few days, I was finally able to run outside and try some new winter gear. While I am eagerly anticipating the 40 degree temperatures later this week, I enjoy cold weather simply for the challenge of piecing together effective winter outfits.

Today, I had the chance to break out some heavy duty apparel from the Sugio winter line. While I ultimately may have overestimated how cold I would be once running, the outfit proved to keep me incredibly warm throughout my windy and 18 degree F run.

As the thickest pair of tights I have ever worn, the Sugoi SubZero Tight is truly designed to handle the coldest of temperatures. While the MidZero Tight would have been more appropriate for today’s run, the dense fleece lining and water resistant paneling of the SubZero provided incredible insulation while remaining comfortable. Although I will probably reserve these tights for temperatures closer to 0-10 degrees F, the SubZero tight is a great solution for those who are easily chilled. The only draw back to the tight is they tend to restrict movement due to their thickness; however, this is still a preferred solution to layering thinner tights in frigid weather.

On top, the Sugoi Midzero Zip was the perfect weight for staying warm and avoiding the chill of the wind. Layered over simply a sports bra, the top has a soft brushed-fleece feel and kept me comfortable while not hindering movement. On colder days a basic tank top or thin moisture-wicking shirt will pair nicely with this piece to provide increased insulation.

Overall, as a company primarily known for cycling gear, I have been impressed with the quality of Sugoi’s running apparel. While these pieces are perhaps a bit much for the tame winter weather of Bloomington, they will easily conquer frigid runs in Chicago or when I visit friends in Iowa. Regardless weather, I hope you are embracing winter running and enjoying the new year!

2011 In Review

What I Wore:
Top: Mizuno Breath Thermo Mock Turtleneck
Bottom: Mizuno Breath Thermo Pant
Gloves: Mizuno Breath Thremo Glove (circa 2006)
Headband (not featured): Generic Fleece Headband

Why: I will never grow tired of returning home. While I love being at my parent’s house, what I enjoy most is the chance to return to the streets where I fell in love with running.

There will always be something special about the place you developed as a runner. For me, as I have previously mentioned, that place will always be Barrington, IL. Perhaps more significant than revisiting Barrington’s rolling hills and quiet streets, is being able to traverse these routes with former teammates. While scheduling conflicts prevail, each Christmas marks an opportunity to add to the memories my friends and I made training as high school and college runners.

With most of my friends returning to town tomorrow, I completed this morning’s run on my own at one of my favorite trails. It was one of the coldest runs I have had so far this winter, so it was a great day to breakout some true cold-weather apparel.

Detailed as several options on my cold weather accessories guide, today’s outfit was composed of pieces from Mizuno’s Breath Thermo line. Designed to be thin but incredibly warm, Breath Thermo pieces use unique fibers to transform moisture wicked-away from the body, into heat. Essentially, Breath Thermo allows a runner to avoid thick layers while remaining dry and warm.

Opting to wear a base layer style top, the Mock Turtleneck was a perfect choice for running on a sheltered trail. Had it been a windy day, I would have paired the top with a basic running vest to add a bit more protection. Since it is designed to worn underneath a layer, the top is very tight fitting and the sleeves are a tad short; I went up a size but still found my arms a bit uncovered.

Although I typically wear tights, with how cold it was today I chose the Breath Thermo Pant as it is warmer than my other options. It is a comfortable, thin pant that can be expanded at the bottom if you prefer more of a “boot cut” fit. For anyone who prefers to not run in spandex, these are an excellent option as they fit well and are not as bulky as some of the thermal-lined options on the market. The only downside is for those with long legs, they run a little short. I had to go with a medium to ensure I had enough length.

Overall, the outfit did very well conquering my first “winter” run of the season. No matter the weather, it is hard to beat running some of my most memorable routes. I will always love coming home! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Welcome to Winter?

Date: December 20, 2011
Time: 7:45 am
Weather: Cloudy/43 degrees F
Location: DePauw University Nature Park/Greencastle, IN

What I Wore:
Top: Nike Element Half-Zip
Bottom: Nike Low-Rise Printed Capri

Why: Now that fall semester is officially done, I am back to logging longer runs, pursuing training goals, and embracing the delayed onset of winter weather.

Despite chilly mornings, the weather in Bloomington, IN has been surprisingly tame for the entire month of December. With most of my runs occurring in temperatures ranging from 40-55 degrees F, my winter running gear is yet to truly be debuted for the season. While I love putting on winter apparel (there is something fun about being able to handle whatever conditions are waiting outside the door), I am ecstatic that in mid-December I am still sporting capri tights!

As one of the more creative and fun pieces on the market this fall, these printed Nike capri tights not only look cool, they are functional and comfortable as well. In comparison to the non-printed Nike low-cut capri, this pair is very thin and silky, giving it a smooth and effortless fit while remaining tight and not riding up over the knee cap. The wide-waist band sits well on my hips, and the zipper pocket in the back is ideal for storing my car key, but still large enough to fit gels.

While Nike does not appear to offer an equally fun capri tight for men, I have been very impressed with the New Balance Men’s Run Capri. As a basic black piece, this capri sits slightly below the knee to keep the joint warm while remaining less restrictive than a full-tight. It also features mesh vents behind the knees to ensure maximum movement and temperature regulation. Although men’s capris are still a newer product, for the moderate weather we have been having in Bloomington, this is a key piece I have been encouraging men to purchase.

As for a top to complement my capri tights, I opted to wear the basic Nike Element Half-Zip. A staple item, it is thin and lacks a thermal or brushed-fleece lining which enables it to be ideal for 40 degree F weather. Paired simply with a sports bra, the top has a snug fit through the body and incredibly long sleeves (on my tall frame I wear a size small). It is a piece that is perfect for transitional weather but can be layered to remain versatile in the winter.

Although I am headed home to Barrington, IL this afternoon, and will surely encounter the predicted icy precipitation, I am thankful the ease into winter has been so gradual. I love my winter running clothes but I take no issue with leaving them packed away in my closet for as long as possible. I hope the weather has been just as cooperative for you and your running!

Too Busy Not to Run

What I Wore:
Jacket: Saucony Ethereal Jacket
Top: Nike Pro Fitted Shirt
Bottom: Nike Filament Capri

Why: No matter how much I enjoy being a student I will always have a strong dislike for the end of the semester. While there is the thrill of moving forward and wrapping something up, I always dread the overload of final tests and papers.

With that in mind, my time the past two weeks has been filled with an abundance of writing and studying. Add in a weekend adventure to New Orleans to watch the Saints beat the Lions, and my schedule has been provided little free time.

It is during hectic times like these I value running the most. While my training has been anything but consistent even the short three mile run I can sneak in is well worth it. Last fall at my sister’s medical school white coat ceremony, one of the speakers captured the sentiment nicely by stating it is during the times you feel overwhelmed and busy that you need exercise the most.

Even when it seems I will become more stressed simply by taking the time to run, in the end, even just a twenty minute jaunt around neighborhood helps me feel more balanced and productive.

For today’s five mile run, I left my lab report and lunch on the table and snuck away to enjoy a few minutes free from academic tasks. Wearing two staple pieces of my fall wardrobe, I was bright and visible in my Saucony Ethereal Jacket in ViZiPRO pink. Featured in one of my Running Village videos, the jacket is not only highly reflective, it is also wind and water resistant. As a thinner coat, it keeps me warm in 30-40 degree F weather when layered over a moisture-wicking t-shirt.

On the bottom, I wore my favorite capri tights: the Nike Filament Capri. Featured in my debut blog post, these comfortable and well-fitting tights see more wear than any other piece in my wardrobe. Whether for running or heading to gym to lift, these will always be a go-to item.

Having returned from my run, I am feeling refocused and ready to tackle the few assignments that remain in my semester. While not everyone has the pressure of schoolwork, this time of year is notoriously hectic in every profession and walk of life.

With the rush of the season, it can be challenging to get out the door, but even if it is just for a few minutes, do not let running (or other exercise) get pushed to the background. You may find it is just the thing you need to improve your mood and productivity.

Race Report: Long Grove Turkey Trot

What I Wore:
Top: Brooks Nightlife Equilibrium Long Sleeve
Bottom: New Balance Men’s 8” Fitted Short
Shoe: Brooks T5 Racer (Updated Brooks Model: T7 Racer)

Race Description: Yesterday marked the completion of my first Turkey Trot! My dad, sister and I ran the Long Grove 5k, and although the 1600 person starting line was a bit crowded on the historic downtown streets, we had a great experience!

As a flat course that loops around downtown, through a covered bridge, and along neighborhood streets, I was excited to see some fast times. The race had a choppy start as people filed through a narrow starting corral, but once beyond, people were off quickly. The 8k was combined with the 5k for the first two miles so it made for some great competition, although I was a bit lonely once the entire group I was racing split to run the 8k.

My racing apparel made me easy to spot on the course, perhaps a detriment when trying to avoid being targeted by competitors, but I was quite pleased with my decision to wear this bright Brooks long sleeve. Color aside, I selected this top as it is incredibly thin, allowing my core and arms to feel warm but not restricted or bulky. On the bottom, I wore New Balance short tights for their light, comfortable fit and ability to not ride up while running.

The race went by quickly and despite my fear of being too bright, I actually crossed the finish line in first place, establishing my first post-collegiate overall female win! Moments later I turned around to see my sister win her age group and finish 8th for women. My dad rounded our team, finishing 223rd and 12th in his age group; proving the Penrod clan is truly built for running.

After the race I enjoyed hot cider and caught up with two high school friends, Brian and Eric, who finished 2nd and 3rd in the 5k. We ran a quick cool down, making a new friend from Traverse City, MI along the way, and attended a brief awards ceremony.

Overall, I had a great experience and loved seeing so many friends, including the Mickeys, a couple who were also visiting from Bloomington, IN. The best part of the race was knowing after I crossed the finish line a delicious dinner was waiting for me at home! With that in mind, my family has determined this is definitely a tradition worth repeating. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

What I Wore:
Top: Saucony Optimal Sport Top
Bottom: Saucony Ignite Tight Capri

Why: My family does not have a lot of holiday traditions. We have our routines and quirks, but we are definitely flexible when it comes to making each holiday season memorable.

While I like to think eating green bean casserole is an important tradition, integral to my family’s Thanksgiving is the creation of a giant gingerbread house. We work on it before and after dinner, designing a massive structure out of cardboard and then piecing together graham crackers and candy to create a masterpiece.

It is quite the time intensive project, but this year as my older sister travels to her high school reunion and my younger sister and I spend our holiday conquering medical/graduate school homework, our gingerbread house may not be quite as extravagant as years past. While we are all a little disappointed at this prospect, investing a little less time in the house will actually enable us to create a new tradition: racing a turkey trot!

As someone who has always affiliated this time of year with running (the NCAA Cross Country Championships take place a few days prior to Thanksgiving), I am ecstatic at the prospect of integrating a race into our holiday tradition. Our race of choice is the Long Grove Turkey Trot 5k, and my dad, sister and I are signed up, while my mom is opting to serve as family photographer.

Although I have taken a break from workouts the past couple weeks in order to focus on quality mileage, my increased strength will hopefully pay off on race day. As for today’s training run, I opted to wear my capri tights with a mid-weight top. A fall staple, the Saucony Ignite capri is basic and tight fitting, resting nicely below the knee. It has a small zipper pocket on the back, a soft liner on the inside, and comes in a variety of fun colors.

Perfectly complementing my capris, the Saucony Optimal Sport Top has a unique feel to it. Rather than a soft or silky material, it has a waffle-like texture which is surprisingly comfortable, although I do prefer to layer a moisture wicking t-shirt underneath it.

While there are plenty of worthwhile traditions out there, I love the prospect of my family sharing in the triumph and toils of running together. Surprisingly, despite having the history of making our giant gingerbread house, I am really looking forward to our trot and cannot wait to share a race recap in a few days. What are some of your Thanksgiving traditions? Is a turkey trot a staple tradition in your family? Whatever your plans are, I hope you have a great holiday!

What I Wore and Why:
I wore a yellow v-neck Asics shirt that had a side pocket. This was great for holding my GU during the marathon. I also choose it because it made me easy to pick out among everyone else!

My shorts are Nike Tempo shorts which are a staple in my running wardrobe. I choose these because of the bright color and the polka dots. When I run I like to wear bright and colorful things, and both of these pieces helped me achieve that for the race!

*Note: Lauren ran her debut marathon in 3:48 and is already thinking about when she will run her next one!

What I Wore: Old Runner’s World Hat that I won at a road race in high school; New Balance shorts with zip pocket - perfect for GUs; blue cross-back sports bra from Target! Also wore Balega socks and Hot Pink Saucony Kinvaras.

Why: Love my hat to keep out the sun; it was blinding, so I was glad I had sunglasses too! I chose the shorts since I’ve run other marathons in them and the pocket is handy. Sports bras from target are super comfortable. Balega socks are tried-and-true in fending off blisters, and I love the lightweight flexibility of the Kinvaras, and the color! I hope to get other colors…maybe bright blue (there is a florescent yellow mens model)!
*Note: Rachel was 37th overall in a time of 1:40!

John: Chicago Half Marathon
September 11, 2011

What I Wore and Why: In the 2010 Chicago Half Marathon, I wore a cotton t-shirt and really wished I hadn’t, but didn’t know the difference as it was my first warm weather race. I wised up for the 2011 Chicago Half and wore a Mizuno shirt, which breathed well, felt “light” throughout the race and was very comfortable. I am definitely sold on the technical T.

My favorite shorts are from Saucony. Again, lightweight and comfortable throughout the race. They are cut a little shorter and do not ride up my thigh (check the person on my right to see what I mean), which drives me a little crazy with other shorts. The small zipper pouch on the rear hip is easy to access and big enough to hold some gel.

I trained with a Timex watch and this was my first race wearing it…I used to think it would be obsessive for an average runner like myself to check pace, but I must admit I loved knowing how I was doing – it gave me confidence that I wouldn’t burn out and lowered my anxiety during the later stage of the race to help me finish strong. I added a wristband to use as a face wipe when needed and it worked pretty well…sweat in the eyes can be painful. Of course, I always wear my Thorlos socks and feel great in my Brooks Adrenaline shoes. My best low tech advice – the Stanley (yes, as in Stanley Tools) sunglasses. They offer excellent UV protection and are indestructible (did I mention their low price?).

*Note: Guess what? “John” is my Dad! I am proud of his running accomplishments - he finished Chicago in 2:10 and is signed up for his fourth half marathon!

Congratulations Lauren, Rachel and John on your racing success and thank you for sharing such great entries. Do these guest posts have you itching to race again? I’m excited to conquer the Long Grove, IL Turkey Trot next week with my family!

What You Wore (On Race Day) - Part 1

I always love the excitement of the fall racing season, especially when it comes to cheering on friends and family at their various half and full marathons!

As a running “style” blogger one of my favorite aspects of attending races is observing what outfits make the cut for race day. Whether an outfit is stylish or goofy, functional or mismatched, most people put some consideration into what they wear to the start line.

To get a sense of what runners are racing in this fall, I hosted a contest for the opportunity to be featured in a blog post. Below are three of the six contest winning submissions, each from a different fall race. Enjoy the entries and get inspired as you plan your next racing season!

Abby: Indianapolis Half Marathon
October 15, 2011

What I Wore:
Top: C9 by Champion Short-Sleeve Athletic Tee and an old long-sleeve I tossed around mile 1.
Bottom: New Balance Short Tights
Shoes: Saucony Kinvara
Accessories: Garmin Forerunner 110; Sweaty Bands sparkly purple headband; cheap Target gloves

Why: It was a chilly, windy morning, so I made sure to wear some old gloves/long sleeve that I could shed as the day/I warmed up. Also, I’d never raced this distance, and I didn’t want to chance a thing, so the short tights were a safe (non-chafing) bet. The race went pretty darn well, so this may be my lucky racing outfit for future.
*Note: Abby debuted in 1:29:30 to take 5th place!

Adam: Akron Marathon
September 24, 2011

What I Wore and Why:
In September, I flew out to Ohio to run the Akron Marathon, a race that advertises itself as one of the greatest. Being from Florida, I knew that the morning start time would be colder than what I’m used to.

I don’t like running in long sleeve shirts, even if they are dri-fit, so I decided to go with orange compression sleeves that could easily be pulled off during the run, along with my favorite white nike running shorts and blue sleeveless top. The goal: to keep warm, look BA, and PR. I pulled it off nicely.

*Note: Adam’s outfit and efforts paid off with a new marathon PR of 3:43!

Christy: Chicago Monster Dash Half Marathon
October 29, 2011

What I Wore and Why:
Run 13.1 miles in a costume? Number one priority is no chafing! I ended up decorating my old tried and true Nike running shorts and retired Kayanos, made my jacket out of a soft spandex, and bought a dance tank.

Ta daa—runner-friendly AND sparkly! The Monster Dash was a blast but next year, I need some more Rocky Horror Picture Show fans to dress up with me as well.

*Note: Not only did Christy complete this half in 2:19:59 she raced the Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon a week later in 2:12:58!

Congratulations to Abby, Adam and Christy for a great racing season and for sharing such excellent blog entries! Eager to see more race outfits? Look for winning entries by John, Lauren and Rachel to be featured in a couple days.

Gear Guide: Dressing for Cold Weather

In order to supplement last week’s guide to cold weather accessories, below is a detailed approach to dressing for winter weather!

While every person varies in what is comfortable for running in the winter, my approach is to wear the least amount of clothing possible to avoid the bulk of too many layers. To do so, I have several key investment pieces that provide sufficient warmth without being restrictive. With each item meeting different weather demands, I am able to supplement my winter apparel with short sleeve tops and accessories to create comfortable and warm outfits. Although it is expensive to acquire quality winter running apparel, with proper care such an investment can last decades.

Key Winter Investment Pieces (with temperature rating):

Capri Tight: midweight thickness; covers knees and exposes calves; 35-50 degrees F; $40-55

How to Dress for the Weather:

40-50 Degrees F
Top: lightweight to midweight long sleeve OR short sleeve with arm warmers
Bottom: capri tight
Gloves: thin; moisture-wicking
Hat: lightweight headband; if raining: cap with bill

30-40 Degrees F
Top: midweight to thermal long sleeve; if windy: short sleeve with soft shell jacket
Bottom: capri tight
Gloves: thin; moisture-wicking
Hat: lightweight hat or midweight headband; if raining: cap with bill

20-30 Degrees F
Top: short sleeve with soft shell jacket; if windy: long sleeve with wind breaker
Bottom: midweight long tight
Gloves: midweight gloves or mittens
Hat: midweight hat or heavyweight headband

10-20 Degrees F
Top: lightweight long sleeve with soft shell jacket OR short sleeve with hard shell jacket
Bottom: thermal or wind resistant long tight
Gloves: thermal glove or mitten
Hat: heavyweight hat

0-10 Degrees F
Top: short sleeve or lightweight long sleeve with hardshell jacket
Bottom: thermal or wind resistant long tight
Gloves: heavyweight mitten
Hat: thermal hat; if windy: neck gaiter or hood

Below 0 Degrees F
Top: midweight long sleeve with hardshell jacket
Bottom: thermal long tights possibly with thin tight layered underneath
Gloves: thin gloves underneath heavyweight mitten
Hat: thermal hat and hood/face covering

TIPS: In creating cold weather combinations, always keep in mind the wind chill, precipitation and how much the temperature may change during the course of a run. When in doubt about the warmth of an outfit, take it for a spin around the neighborhood as a test before heading out for your run. Also, if layering with cotton (sweatshirts, long sleeves, etc), use a moisture-wicking base to ensure your core stays warm and dry. Be sure to stop by your local running store for assistance finding the perfect apparel for your climate.

Good luck battling the cold weather; let me know if you have any questions!
